Claude is not one thing. It's three.

Most people discover Claude through the chat interface and assume that's the whole product. It's not. There are three distinct versions, each built for a different kind of work. Knowing the difference is the first step to actually getting results, not just getting answers.

Chat, Cowork, and Code

Same AI. Three different ways to work with it. Here's what each one actually does.

Chat

Claude Chat

The version you already know

Claude Chat is the familiar back-and-forth conversation interface. You ask, it answers. Available on web, mobile, and desktop. It's the most accessible entry point and a genuinely powerful tool for a wide range of tasks.

  • Available on web, iPhone, Android, and desktop
  • Conversational, real-time interaction
  • Writing help, brainstorming, editing, research
  • File uploads supported (documents, images)
  • Projects let you save memory and instructions
Best for Quick questions, one-off writing tasks, research, drafting emails, and getting feedback on your ideas.
Code

Claude Code

The most powerful version

Claude Code runs in a terminal (command line) and has full control over your computer. It was built for developers but is increasingly used by non-technical people who want to build custom tools and automate complex systems.

  • Terminal-based (requires basic setup)
  • Full computer access including file system and browser
  • Builds apps, scripts, and custom automation
  • Can modify code, run programs, and test results
  • Works well for building things that don't exist yet
Best for Technical projects, building custom tools, complex automation, and developers who want AI inside their workflow.

Which version is right for you?

Answer these scenarios and you'll know exactly where to start.

You want to draft a social media post, refine an email, or get feedback on an idea.

This is a quick, conversational task. You want a response, not a finished file.

Start with Chat

You want to turn a folder of client notes into a polished report every week.

This is a repeatable business task that involves your actual files and delivers a finished document.

Start with Cowork

You want to research a topic and get a well-organized summary you can save and share.

Great use case for Chat with Projects, where Claude can remember your preferences and context over time.

Start with Chat

You want Claude to manage your inbox, flag important emails, and draft replies.

This involves connecting to Gmail and working autonomously inside your actual accounts.

Start with Cowork

You want to build a custom tool, app, or automation that doesn't exist yet.

This requires writing, testing, and running code. Claude Code is built exactly for this.

Start with Code

You're brand new to Claude and not sure where to begin.

Start with Chat, build the habit, then move to Cowork when you have a repeatable task worth automating.
